Biography

Guga Kakabadze was born in 1975. He studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts at the Faculty of Cinematography. In 1995, after completing two courses, he decided to continue his studies in Moscow at Russian State Institute of Cinematography, in Department of Painting where he also studied cinematography.

He is a representative of an artistic dynasty. His grandfather, Petre Kakabadze, was a graphic artist who lost his eye due to a contusion received during the Second World War II and stopped painting. Uncle, Tamaz Kakabadze, known as “Kakacha”, was one of the outstanding painters of the 80s, who played a great role in the development of Georgian fine art, and despite the fact that he died young, he is still considered as a relevant artist.

Guga grew up in an environment where artists and representatives of the artistic field gathered every day, which largely determined his life path. He started drawing at the age of 12, and when his family noticed his talent, he was taken to an art school, Gia Gugushvili’s studio.

The period of his work in Moscow was one of the most successful periods in his career. He had a permanent exhibition and fair space “Mill”. Then, due to the political situation, he was called to return to Georgia and continue his work in his homeland. For some time, he was engaged in shooting TV series and films and he is a production artist for some TV series. However, his true calling is painting, which he is actively engaged in today.

Artist Statement

My art serves as a canvas for the rich tapestry of my lifetime experiences, each stroke and symbol representing a fragment of my journey through existence. By visualizing these experiences through symbolic language, I aim to transcend the constraints of literal representation, inviting viewers to interpret and connect with the universal essence of human existence. Through my work, I seek to evoke a visceral response, sparking introspection and dialogue about the shared narratives that shape our individual identities and collective consciousness.
